FAQ

  • What style of singing do you teach?
Vocal technique is not about style, it is about developing healthy habits of consistent air flow, breath support, resonance and flexibility so that you can sing ANY style. I use a variety of methods that I have learned from studying with many different instructors over the years. My main vocal exercises are from the studios of Dr. Brian Gill's Mindful Voice Training (https://gillmindfulvoicetraining.com/teacher/brian-gill/) and Kathleen Adams's Voce Classica (https://voceclassica.com/opera-performer.html). As you learn these techniques, you will be able to apply them to the style of music that you want to sing.
  • How do I book a voice or piano lesson?
I do not schedule lessons through this website, only through contacting me through my studio email: noel.edmonson.clark@gmail.com. Once you email me, I will send you my voice/piano contracts with detailed information. When you have read and agreed to the contract pricing and policies, we will see if there is room in the schedule, which will be shared with you via a link to a "live schedule".
  • How often should I take private lessons?
Your age, skill-level and desire for improvement will determine the length of your lessons. We can discuss this together and decide which will work best for you: 30-minute, 45-minute and 60-minute lessons either weekly or biweekly.
  • Do you teach in-person or online?
I teach both! In-person is my preferred method, but virtual lessons are convenient for some families and are helpful when there are unexpected conflicts in the student's schedule. I use FaceTime, Zoom, Facebook Messenger and/or Skype for my virtual lessons.
  • What hours do you teach?
I teach Monday through Friday starting at 11am and ending at 6:30pm, with 30-minute breaks in between lessons. I DO NOT teach lessons on Saturdays or Sundays or on Holidays.
  • What should I bring to my voice lessons?
    1. Binder dedicated to Vocal sheet music and voice documents. 2. Water bottle with room temperature water and a straw. 3. Recording device (smartphone, tablet, etc.) 4. Optional - Audition binder (if you are preparing for auditions) You will sing with more freedom and less frustration if you refrain from eating or drinking dairy and too much caffeine.
  • What should I bring to my piano lessons?
    1. ALL piano books (Faber & Faber Piano Adventures LESSON, THEORY, PERFORMANCE & TECHNIQUE AND ARTISTRY) 2. Reading glasses (if you wear them) 3. Binder for individual sheet music or chord charts
  • What can I expect to happen at my first voice lesson?
I first want to get to know you and understand your goals as a performer. I will want to hear you sing a song that you are most confident singing. (This can be with a karaoke track). I will gather such information as: - Past songs you have memorized and/or performed - Past shows and/or roles you have performed - Your current vocal exercises (if applicable) - Future auditions/performances you are preparing for - Dream roles - College or conservatory preparation etc... Then I will give you my voice practice documents and we will begin training. My exercises come from 40 years of training from different instructors and even more years of performing. The exercises are "out of the box" and may seem silly, but they come from a scientific understanding of how the voice works and what will create the most efficient progress in developing a healthy technique to serve you for the rest of your life. Be prepared to work hard, be silly and have fun singing!!
  • What can I expect to happen at my first piano lesson?
At the first lesson I will want to hear what your piano playing goals are. We will evaluate your skills so that we can choose which level of piano books for you to purchase. I will share different pages of books for you to play to see what feels challenging to you and/or what is too easy for you. After the first lesson, I will ask you to order the correct level of books from the Faber and Faber Piano Adventures Library (found either on Amazon Prime, or at most music stores). I will want you to purchase these books in the correct skill level: LESSON PERFORMANCE THEORY TECHNIQUE AND ARTISTRY If you are interested in playing chord sheets (e.g., as used in worship bands, rock bands, etc.) I can also share chord charts of your favorite songs which I expect to be kept in a Binder and brought to each lesson.
  • What are your Covid-19 protocols?
    - Hand sanitizing will be available for every lesson. - I do not require students to wear a mask, but you may wear one at your discretion. - I usually do not wear a mask while teaching in my home, but I will wear one at the student’s request. - I will have many diffusers running during our lesson using Thieves, Peppermint, and other anti-viral Young Living essential oils. If you are sensitive to certain essential oils, let me know. - Voice and Piano lessons will use social distancing to the best of our ability. (Piano students will be using my acoustic piano and I will be using my digital piano.) - Voice students are required to bring their own bottle of water. (I am willing to share my disposable straws.) - If any of your family members or mine have tested positive for Covid-19, I reserve the right to do online lessons until everyone in your family or mine has received a negative Covid test.
